What is the product option called "catalog"

I have seen this question asked at least twice but I think admin is missing the point. On the product page, there are three places where the word catalog appears: one at the top, right under simple product, catalog visibility settings at the bottom and catalog mode. At least twice someone has asked about the catalog switch at the top of the page next to virtual and download and you referred the to the support article on Catalog Mode. Catalog Mode is not the question. The question is, what is “catalog” at the top of the page next to virtual and download? I can’t tell that it does anything. Catalog visibility and mode are fully understood.

Thank you for contacting the support and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

The checkbox ‘Catelog’ controls the visibility of ‘Catalog Mode’ tab. When this checkbox is disabled, Catelog Mode tab will not be visible.

Download checkbox at the top does a similar job for Downloadable tab.
